"Looks like the weather might hold out." Will hauled in the last brick of Coors and set it on the kitchen floor. "We've got ribs marinating, fruit salad, French bread, music, and a special treat for dessert." With a wink and the flash of his devastating smile he encouraged his roommate, the birthday boy, to get ready. "You going to wear your briefs to this shindig? Come on, man, I've got shit planned for tonight. You've got to snap out of this funk!" Nic returned the smile, a half-hearted grin that did not reach his eyes. He wasn't in the mood for whatever Will had planned but knowing how much trouble he had gone through, Nic intended to show his appreciation.
Heading upstairs to get dressed, Nic glanced at the frames that perched in the center of his dresser. They weren't recent but they definitely held good memories for him, taken when everything was less complicated. His thumb stroked the frame with a reverent caress, as the two teens in the picture smiled back. Nic sighed knowing the object of his affections was out of reach right now, perhaps she always would be.
Their friends had already begun to arrive as Nic descended the stairs. "Hey sis," he embraced Randi warmly.
"Happy birthday Nicky!" Randi squeezed him tight. "Looks like a nice turn-out!" Randi let her eyes wander around the room, settling on Will for a long moment before shifting her attention back to her older brother. She smiled warmly and urged him to mingle. "I'm going to say hi to Will and grab a drink; please try and lighten up tonight Nic, have some fun and don't worry about...things. Mingle." Giving him one last hug Randi took his hand, gave it a reassuring squeeze and walked away.

He laughed inwardly; it was no easy task to not worry especially when that "thing" was Rayne. He was flat out in love with her, always had been and he always would be but Nic was beginning to realize she didn't return the feelings, at least not in the same way. Regardless, he would always be there for her.
Nic watched as his sister made her way toward his roommate. It surprised him that Randi and Will were still an item. They had been dating since high school and even though they both had occasionally dated other people, they always found their way back to each other.
In the meantime, neither Will nor Nic lacked attention from girls. "Find anything interesting my friend? There is a lot of prime tail at this party!" Will passed him another beer as he scanned the room. "See anything you like? I know I do..." He winked at a slender blonde who immediately flushed at the attention and then looked around warily, probably in search of Randi.
"You know you will be in deep shit if my sister catches you doing that right?"
Will tossed his head back and laughed, "Trust me, I can handle Randi. Besides I am not dumb enough to attempt it when I don't know exactly where she is. She'd have my balls in a vice."

There had been a cake and, as promised, excitement in the form of a stripper. Several hours later the party began to wind down and only the hardcore partiers were left. Nic wandered upstairs wondering briefly if he could escape the rest of the night in his room. He made it as far as the top of the stairs when a lilting voice coming from the direction of the pool table stopped him. "I wondered where you guys kept the pool table. I've always wanted to learn how to play; do you think you might like to show me?"

Hallie Dodson. Nic's eyes swept over her. She looked wholesome, misty green eyes and silky red hair that stood out against her pale soft skin. He remembered seeing her one Friday night at the quad during a free concert. Nic had flirted with her and now she was here in his house doing the same thing to him. He smiled; why not, he thought as he moved in closer to her. She smelled nice, like lavender. If he'd wanted to, Nic could probably show her a lot of things. Maybe he would; it was his birthday after all. "Sure, I could show you. First thing you need to do is learn how to handle the stick properly. A nice, steady stroke and you're halfway there."
Happy birthday Nic. Sometimes what we hope for, the prince and the princess, doesn't come true. However, I'm not willing to give up yet.
ReplyDeletelove LOVE this! I am so glad you let us see Nic, nature boy, who might have blown it a long time ago when he went after the bugs instead of the girl. He sure has grown up, and he sure does look like his dad.
Beth I am really enjoying this. I am SO GLAD that you encouraged me to do it.
ReplyDeleteNic does look like his dad. But sometimes he is soft like his mom.
Oh wow Nic....not always a good little boy is he? LOL. Teaching her how to handle a stick. I've been waiting for see just how bad he had it for Rayne and it's as I suspected, totally gone over her. But I'm glad he's trying to get over her by getting under someone else, life's too short not to have any fun. This is exactly why I like these finding out so many things I didn't know. Love it.
ReplyDeleteMuzegoddess thank you so much! That means a lot and that is exactly what we were hoping for. These small glimpses are very telling. All the things that go on behind the scenes, they say so much about where they are in the present, especially the ones that are in the main story.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
I loled at the "handle the stick" part! Typical male saying! Rafe's kids look so much like him it's crazy! I am loving this! Short but very sweet and entertaining!
ReplyDeletehmmm Nic & Rayne... I'd love to see how that goes!
You know much I'd love it. I'm like the fairy godmother standing there in the Disney Sleeping Beauty movie, prince looking at the baby princess, me hoping that's how it will go. Hoping.
ReplyDeleteThank you Qui! Rafe's kids do look very much like him. I admit I like the short and sweet myself. It is much less pressure. And these pieces can be quite revealing!
ReplyDeleteNot sure how things will go with Nic and Rayne but I do know he will always be there for her just like his father is for Rayne's mother.
Beth you and I both had high hopes for those two but sometimes you cannot change what the heart feels. I guess we have to see how it plays out!
ReplyDeleteJust keep waving that wand and splash fairy dust wherever you can.
LOL, Nic's instructions are really easy to follow.. I bet he will be a great teacher... and Hallie a very eager student!
ReplyDeleteHe looks a lot like his father...
I didn't know he was in love with Raynie...:(
I don't think Rayne will look at him as a man, I mean, he will always be more of a best friend, a brother...
it sucks cause he really looks like a a great man, sweet, caring, handsome, smart, what else could she ask for?
Sadly, Raynie seems to have a soft spot for bad guys.
But who knows, lives goes around and around and maybe one day they will end together! That would be awesome!
I'm really enjoying this blog, it makes me happy to read it... away from all the drama from other stories (including mine)LOL...
Gayl and I took so many shots of those two, Nic and Rayne. We did a couple of posts on Serendipity. And I vividly remember a shot I don't think I kept...they were what, about 13? And Rainie was expecting the big FIRST KISS. And Nic decided that catching bugs was his first priority.
ReplyDeleteBad move. Very very bad move. What can we say. He's nature boy.
S@ndy first of all thank you so much for reading. It is much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteNic does look like his father. A lot! Yes, he was and is very much in love with Rayne. He sort of blew his chance but they will always be close just like her mother and his father, if not lovers one day. I just don't know if it is in the cards for them.
Beth I do remember that particular event! Shook my head and made Rafe have a talk with his son as i recall. I may have those shots somewhere...
I did I double take in that first shot, swore if was Slim, nope, his Xerox son. Nic is a nice mixture of Rafe and Gayl, really looks like Gayl side on. Lovely looking young man. And they have enough beer there to sink a battleship, LOL!
ReplyDeleteAnd Oooo. Sizzle. Nothing like a little 'stick' handling on your birthday. I am quite enjoying these vignettes, keep 'em coming!
Thanks Drew, Xerox son, that is so funny. It is interesting that he actually resembles Bonni more than Slim. Must be the hair.
ReplyDeleteThose boys can pound down the beers. While you can't tell there were actually a lot of partiers at the house for Nic's party. But it is a lot of beer/JD for sure.
Glad you like them Drew. I am enjoying the glimpses myself. They are easy to write, short and sweet. Well maybe not always sweet...
Always good to see more Nic. This looks like you had a lot of fun writing it, and it's a lot of fun reading it too!
ReplyDeleteOh thank you Rad! These pieces are a lot of fun. No pressure because they aren't linear, more like free-form writing. That's how I feel about it anyway.
